Military Pilot Training

All Air Force pilot candidates are beginning their flying training with IFS (introductory flight screening). Civilian flight instructors in Pueblo, Colorado are administering the new flight screening program.  Students generally fly the Mitsubishi Diamond DA-20 in their training.  The program is a forty day program which includes ground school and a twenty five flight-hour flight screening course for up to one thousand and seven hundreds students per year.

The next step in the process of becoming a military pilot is joint specialized undergraduate pilot training, that prepares student pilots for the full spectrum of flying missions and aircraft.  The term “Joint” denotes training with sister services such as the Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy.

The competition in the military training is intense and just for one year training, the student has to commit for the service of ten years to the Air Force. So if the student has that much enthusiasm for flying, only then they should choose military pilot schools. More than that, the standards, which are set for military pilots, are quite high.

High levels of physical fitness, good health and perfect academic record are some of the most important attributes which are searched for in a potential military pilot candidate. Working in military pilot profession is very different from how the civilian pilots work and the student must be ready to work for country in dire times, use lethal weapons and face body harms.

A military schools are offering boarding opportunities for parents who feel this style is needed for their son or for boys who would like a military-style education. The different military schools are sometimes offering different focusings to fit what a student wishes to pursue. Some of the military schools are offering  aviation for the students who would like learning how to fly a plane.

Military Pilot Training Prerequisites

In order to enter flight training, a candidate must pass a Flight Class I Flying Physical. To become a pilot, it means that the candidate’s vision can be no worse than 20/70 (but correctable with glasses to 20/20) in each eye. To enter Navigator Training, the candidate can have vision no worse than 20/200 in each eye (which also must be correctable to 20/20).

After the flight school, the standards relax a little. Navigators and Pilots who have already graduated flight training, can remain fliers as long as their vision doesn’t deteriorate beyond 20/400 in each eye (but is correctable to 20/20).

Schools offering Military Pilot Training

1. Florida Air Academy

The Florida Air Academy is located in Melbourne, Florida, and is offering a flight training program for students which are interested in becoming Military pilots. To participate in the program, students have to obtain satisfactory grades, written parental permission, speak and read English well and pass physical and medical exams.

The program is created to teach students who want to fly for a career, as well as those individuals who only wish to have an aviation hobby. Students in the aviation program can also join the Kitty Hawk Air Society, that is an academic honor society for the Air Force JROTC.

2. Admiral Farragut Academy

Admiral Farragut Academy is located in St. Petersburg, Florida, offering a program in aviation training and two-hours of daily training at a nearby small airport. Students at the same time use a smartboard in the classroom, as well as training DVDs and simulation software.

Aviation courses are offered beginning in sixth grade, but a private pilot program starting the school year in which a students turn seventeen. Additionally to the training, the flight program also includes flight physicals and FAA exams.

3.Randolph-Macon Academy

The aviation program at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia, is designed to allow students to earn their flying license. The school owns several aircraft which are housed in the nearby Warren County / Front Royal Airport and are available for student use. The school is the only one of its kind in the country to help students get their solo wings.

Students must be sixteen and able to pass the FAA exams to earn their solo wings. Those students who are seventeen can choose to enroll in the private pilot program.

4. St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy

High school seniors and juniors can join the aviation program at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy. Students are going to work towards earning a private pilot certificate while at the same time keeping up with the rest of the normal curriculum. The A grade students get on the course is based solely on their score on the FAA exam.

The first several weeks offer classroom training. Airport training begins after the first two weeks. Students will participate in thirty hours of in-air training, as well as thirty hours of solo flight.
