Courses and Trainings in Air Navigation

Air navigation is when people make controllable and non-controllable flights in the atmosphere of Earth on aircrafts that are lighter than air (unlike in aviation, where they use flying vehicles that are heavier than air).

Until the beginning of 1920ies, this term “air navigation” was used to identify all the movements in the air in general. In all languages, particularly in English and French, the term “aeronautics” is meant for the process of airspace learning using aircrafts of all types. Sometimes in Russian language they use the word “aeronautics” to describe this process.

An air navigator is a person that was flying on airships and aircrafts and was doing air navigation. The name comes from Greek words — aer, that means air and nauta, that means an aeronaut. This is how they named people that were going up high into the sky on balloons.

Program to Get Air Navigation Degree

Air Navigation DegreeWhen you think about becoming an air navigator, you have to know, that there is a special course for that. A course with name Air Navigation and Airports is made for students that majored in air traffic controlling and for professionals in the sector of air navigation. The course is divided into two parts that go evenly.

One of them is a Masters 60 ECTS in the subject of Air Navigation and Airports (that has a basic training course for air traffic controller) and another one is a course that helps you to receive a qualification in Visual Rating for Tower Aerodrome / Control Instrument).

If you want to be an air navigator, you have to pass lots of trainings that have to correspond lots of standards of high international level. A lot of attention is paid to these kinds of trainings, because they consider air safety rules and demand lots of carefulness. Professors and teachers that make lectures on this course, should be licensed by an Agency in National Safety in the Air.

As for the practical part, the instructors have to be specially taught professionals that have a great experience in controlling air traffic. Sometimes this stuff can have a partial job in different high level organizations of NATS.

Some Colleges to Where You Can Go to Get an Air Navigation Degree

Air Navigation ProgramsThere are several schools that are situated in United Stated and Canada where you can go. One of them is situated in Canada, in Winnipeg, it has a simple name of Air Navigation School. Many navigators from Canada and other NATO countries and not NATO countries went to get their degree in a faculty of aircrew training in Canadian Forces Air Navigation School (CFANS). Training in air navigation has been a very strong faculty here, since the year it was set up, in 1968.

Another two schools, CFS and CNS decided to combine together in 1967 and to make a CFNS, a School that will be the center of all the trainings. Later, this school together with Air Navigation School decided to share responsibilities in preparing and maintaining Canadian Forces training standards of aircrew and to make trainings for post-graduated navigators and pilots.

In late 1968, there was reorganization. They decided to combine all the students from ARNC, ASC, and NIC, so that they started to make part of ANS. Aero Navigation School had changed its name to CFANS. The other staff that was left, together with Commander of CFNS decided to form a CFFTSU which is now directed by Training Command. Now, they have to check the quality of all trainings that are made in Training Command, doing the previous job of CFNS. At the beginning the CFFTSU was a standards squadron for navigators and pilots.

They also were in charge of ICP trainings that considered different technique to fly. This unit was renamed to Central Flying School. The names of schools can regularly change, but they still have the same functions. The undergraduate trainings for aircrew had grown up a lot during past years, but they still have their requirements to follow high standards are still the same.
